YOUNG AT HEART GHANA SET ON EMPOWERING THE NEXT GENERATION OF DIGITAL INNOVATORS

The first quarter of the year has seen remarkable impact made by Young at Heart Ghana, a budding start-up organization seeking to empower children with critical and relevant digital literacy and utilization skills. The organization has over the past 2 years championed a revolution of practical ICT education for children in rural and deprived communities in Ghana, attracting the attention and earning the support of Telecommunication giant Tigo Ghana Limited.

The organization has so far empowered over 2500 children in target communities in the Ashanti, Central, Eastern and Greater Accra Regions with basic ICT literacy and utilization skills. It has achieved this great feat by training volunteers from various tertiary institutions mostly from the University of Ghana, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, University of Cape Coast, Koforidua Polytechnic and All Nations University College. The trained volunteers run modules that focus on basic Introduction to ICT, programming, using I.T as a business tool and using I.T for Arts. Children in target schools which have benefitted from the run modules have recorded massive improvement in test scores and their general appreciation of ICT as a subject. For example in St. Monica Anglican Basic School in Bonwire, students recorded an improvement from a 70% pass rate to a 100% pass rate after a term of running weekly practical modules on basic ICT skills! A total of 2 ICT hubs are currently operational in Aboabogya (Atwima Mponua) as well as Koforidua ((New Juabeng District) that allow for constant practice lessons.

This year the organization has expanded to include modules that target children in urban areas as well as children in rural communities upon realizing the general under utility of digital platforms to trigger creativity among Ghanaian children. In addition to running Digital Innovators Clubs (#DiggieClubs) in schools, Young At Heart Ghana has so far organized Digital Fairs partnering with organizations like the Ghana Robotics Academy Foundation, Osramba Artworld and Origma Tech and Tigo Ghana. The partnering organizations together with volunteers exposed children to concepts like Robotics, Digital Art, Virtual Reality and Mobile Technologies respectively. #DiggieFair aims at exposing children to applications of digital literacy at an early stage in order to engage their creative potentials. The fair also provides an opportunity to test the Ananse The Teacher E-learning Software a software developed by the organization to provide children with exciting and fruitful learning experiences. 2 digital fairs have been organized so far this year. The first was on the 18th of March at True Love School while the second took place at Madonna School on the 28th of March 2016.

Josephine Marie Godwyll the founder and national coordinator of Young At Heart Ghana asserts, “The next generation will be able to apply skills on digital literacy in solving problems if they will be encouraged to recognize the use of I.T as a problem-solving tool. It is key to expose them to its Utility at an early age”. She further added that recognition and funding support from Tigo Ghana Limited as the Digital Changemaker has greatly impacted and fuelled this drive for effective digital literacy. She is calling on more organizations to come on board to partner and move this agenda forward. A special kudos also goes to all partnering organizations like the Ghana Robotics Academy Foundation (GRAF), ASTS (Dare to Dream Ghana), Osramba Co.Ltd, Expo Entertainment, Origma Tech and True Love school for the support during #DiggieFairs. Because of you, our dream of empowering the next generation of digital innovators has become a reality.

Young at Heart Ghana greatly cherishes its volunteers drawn from University of Ghana, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, University of Cape Coast, Ashesi University, Koforidua Polytechnic and All Nations University College who have volunteered their time energy and resources to empower the next generation of Digital Innovators.
