Weija is located in the Ga South Municipal District of the Greater Accra Region; about 25 km drive away from the capital – Accra. It is one of the oldest communities in Accra which has seen a lot of infrastructural development in recent times. A lot of people are acquiring more properties and developing them into very fine structures in that part of town. Most residents are migrants from other parts of the country live in Weija and other surrounding communities like Dukonah, Macarthy Hill, Gbawe, Dansoman, Bortianor, Oblogo and Glefe.
The community is very famous for the dam which has been constructed over the Densu River. It is the second largest in the country after the Volta Dam. It was built in 1978 and currently, it provides water for about 2.5 million people living in both the eastern and western parts of Accra.
Weija has a Leprosarium which houses over 30 inmates. The facility is over 20 years and it is headed by the Reverend Father Campbell. The Weija Clinic, under the Ghana Health Services specializes in the treatment of communicable diseases and Advance Body Sculpt, situated at the Weija Junction provides plastic surgery consultation, liposuction and breast implants.
Weija is fast developing into a commercial centre recently. Businesses and shops are being put up in the area, especially along the main Weija-Accra road. The West Hills Mall covers a large tract of land, about 24-acres and has been opened for shoppers living in and around Weija. It provides electronic, beauty, lifestyle, financial, insurance and pharmaceutical services to residents.
The Weija Shoprite is a retail shop also located along the main road close to West Hills Mall. Shoprite is a large shop complex serving people in Weija with wide range of meat products, groceries and household items. Residents looking for places to watch movies should visit the SilverBird Cinema. It has three movie halls which provides viewers the 3-D experience.
Specializing in the sale of pizza, chicken wings, salads and other desserts, and serving as one of the favorite hangouts for people living in Weija is Eddy’s pizza which is close to the Silverbird Cinema. There is Starbites Cafe in Weija which serves a wide array of burgers, fries, pizza, pasta, and sandwich.
