Greater Accra PLACES

Let’s explore Achimota

Achimota is one of the oldest and major towns in the Accra Metropolitan Area.

The area is located on the newly constructed Accra/Kumasi Highway; one of the great things about Achimota is its accessibility to various alternative routes and highways. One of the popular residential parts of this neighborhood is Mile 7 and New Achimota, which mainly offer accommodation for both short stay and long-term rent and sale.

The Ghana Christian International High School can be found in Achimota and offers junior and senior high school education programs with additional boarding facilities. Access to water and electricity in the area is average with provisions for extra water tank storage and generators in some residents. The popular recreation in this neighborhood is its Golf course. Achimota is home to one of Ghana’s finest Golf courses, the Achimota Golf Club was established as far back in 1934. The course proposes 18 holes, a practice range, tournaments, lessons, caddie and golf set rentals.

Achimota is also famous for the prestigious Achimota School, which dates as far back into the 1920s as a co-ed senior high school with boarding facilities. The Achimota School boasts of prominent alumnae such as former presidents of Ghana, Kwame Nkrumah, Jerry John Rawlings, John Evans Atta Mills and the current John Dramani Mahama. The Achimota group of schools also has schools that offer primary to junior high-level education.

With healthcare, this area also has its own hospital, the Achimota Hospital, which provides both public and private healthcare to the community and other neighboring areas. Other amenities include the Achimota Police Station, which helps to keep order in the area. The great thing about all these facilities is that they are all located close to each other hence making them easily accessible. Achimota is also popular for its forest reserve, one of the very few left in the Accra Metropolis.  It was used to preserve some animals when the Accra zoo was being relocated and now trying to be preserved as an eco park.

This area also has local business establishments like most major banks in Ghana and hotel accommodation. The Achimota community may be quite old but still offers decent accommodation and business and recreational facilities.
