This is the continuation of our earlier post DOUBLE TAP – EFFECTS OF SOCIAL MEDIA ON THE AVERAGE GHANAIAN. 1/2 Read here if you haven’t and then continue, to know more about the effects of social media on the average Ghanaian.
………Perhaps you haven’t read the tragic story of Liz Marks, a popular teen who was disfigured by a wreck after texting at the wheel. Because she got distracted at the seemingly innocent text she received, she has become blind in one eye, lost her sense of smell and some of her hearing, she is unable to create tears due to her damaged tear ducts and she cannot fall sleep naturally. One might ask how all this happened just because of a ‘text’. Below are pictures of her, before and after the fatal accident.
Lesson:Focus on the most important things, before you delve into texting and the like. First things first, remember?
It has become rather exciting to put ourselves out there, to make new friends and to interact online. Have you made sure you’re not putting too much of yourself out there? Though it is great to let people know more about you, you’re also in a vulnerable position with your privacy now more than ever. The fact that some people rant on Twitter doesn’t mean you should do the same. Prospective employees can be researched through the social media. Now is the worst time to write negative stuff about your bossy colleague, because chances are he’ll read about it. Have fun, of course, but assess your privacy settings if you need to share some personal information and pictures of yourself online
Train yourself to take good advantage of everything. If it is easy to access information, it means you can enlighten yourself. Through apps such as LinkedIn, you can post jobs and also find jobs if you are an employee. Wikipedia gives amazing information on almost everything on the face of this earth. Coursera is a for-profit educational technology company that offers massive online courses from various universities. All courses offered by Coursera are “accessible for free”. It works with prestigious universities such as Stanford University, Princeton University, the University of Michigan, University of Pennsylvania and other amazing institutions. These are few of the great applications which are available for everyone.
People will never stop amazing applications because it probably distracts you. Don’t be like that lazy law student, or that person who is easily influenced by the social media such that it affects everything they do negatively. You should have the ability to control yourself when it comes to the social media. Make use of it, of course, but prioritize. When you’re able to balance all these, you can enjoy the social media as well as its perks of being introduced to endless ideas and opportunities
♠ ‘Double-tap to like’: Instead of hunting for the tiny ‘Like’ icon on your Instagram (an online photo-sharing, video-sharing and social networking service that enables its users to take pictures and videos and share them), you can simply ‘double-tap’ any image in your feed to show that you like it. A small heart will pop up confirming your like.
