“An African City” is a web series created by Nicole Amarteifio and produced by Millie Monyo. It tells the story of five beautiful and successful African females who have returned to their home continent and confide in one another about love and life in “An African City”. The first episode of the popular web series aired on March 2nd, 2014 via YouTube. The series currently has 10 episodes with approximately 27,707 subscribers and a minimum of 91,000 views per episode. Making it one of the most watched YouTube Channels in Ghana.
Since the launch of the first episode, it has received worldwide recognition and was recently featured on BBC Magazine where the series was described as Africa’s answer to “Sex and the City”. It was also recognized on CNN’s African Voices as a new African web series breaking taboos, dismantling stereotypes, and creating major buzz about the continent.
The main characters in “An African City” are:
Maame Yaa Boafo – who plays a character by the name of Nana Yaa, a journalist working as a Talk-Show host at one of Ghana’s top radio stations.
Nana Mensah – a Ghanaian-American actress playing the role of Sade, a marketing manager of a prominent Nigerian Bank in Accra.
Maame Adjei – portrayed as Zeinab an entrepreneur.
Murie Humbert – known to viewers as Makena who has returned to Ghana as a jobless divorcee.
Esosa E. – a captivating Nigerian actress playing the role of Ngozi, a devout Christian and a celibate who has vowed to not have sex until marriage.
“An African City” is a must watch series for anyone who wants to know what it is like to journey back home after living abroad and becoming accustomed to a different way of life. It is witty, funny, and entertaining on many levels.
