CHAMPIONS LEAGUE REFLECTIONS

ARSENAL SET UNWANTED RECORD

Arsenal becomes first English team to concede 200 Champions League goals. Everyone knew that it will take a football miracle for Arsenal to return back to England unscathed.

The Gunners were ripped to shreds by Carlo Ancelotti’s side despite being level at half-time in the Allianz Arena. This was vintage attacking Bayern at its best in front of their home crowd.

With this humiliating result, Arsenal will need more than a miracle to qualify for the quarter-finals of the Champions League. Arsenal look set to be kicked out at the last 16 stage of the competition for the seventh season in a row. Now, this is consistency.

The Catalans are dismantled

Barcelona was battered by a PSG on Valentine ’s Day in Paris. It was an absolutely masterful performance from PSG in Paris.

Di Maria opened the scoring in this entertaining match when he whipped a free kick over the wall into the net. Edison Cavani, who was celebrating his 30th birthday, got his name on the scoresheet with his seventh goal in seven games in the competition this season.

Five-times European champions Barca, with their trident of Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez, and Neymar subdued, have not exited in the last 16 since going out to Liverpool in the 2006/07 season. They are now staring at the face of elimination because no side in the Champions League era has ever overturned a first leg deficit of 4 or more goals.

On Valentine ’s Day, PSG gave their beloved fans a gift of entertaining full thrust football to the amusement of their owners. The Holy Grail that evades PSG year in year out in the Champions League may just be achieved this season.

Madrid’s title defense lives on

Defending Champions, Real Madrid came back from a goal behind to win their match against Napoli by 3 goals to 1. Real Madrid shrugged off conceding an early away goal to take a huge step towards a seventh straight Champions League quarterfinal.

Real, who are in the knockout stages for the 20th straight season, won the game with goals by Benzema, Kroos, and Casemiro. Los Blancos took advantage of Napoli’s slackness in possession to control the game.

Real Madrid is firmly in control in this tie. They are favorites to progress to the quarter-finals of the Champions League. We may not know, another final appearance may be on the cards for Madrid.

With key players coming back for Madrid, will their presence back in the team further fuel this team’s desire for another title push in Europe?

Manchester City and Monaco make Champions League History

Manchester City and Monaco set a Champions league record leading to the highest scoring first leg ever in a knockout tie. Both teams took part in a Champions League match for the ages and contributed 8 goals to entertaining match.

With 8 strikes combined, the teams set a record for the most total goals in Champions league knockout round first leg. This was more memorable for the Citizens because they had to come back from a goal behind twice in this match to win this first leg 5-3. Leroy Sane has the final say on a crazy night of football with the final goal of the game in the 82nd minute to complete the Citizens’ comeback.

Eight Goals, 10 Yellow Cards, Falcao & Aguero Magic; Manchester City and Monaco showed us why we love football.
