The 2016/2017 season came to a successful end on Sunday, 22nd October 2017, with Aduana Stars crowned Kings of Ghana once again, after seven years of failure.
It has been an incredible campaign for Aduana Stars, which has culminated in their crowning as Ghana Premier League winners for the second time in their history. The Fire club clinched the title after a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Elmina Sharks on the penultimate weekend of the season. So entering the final week of the League, Aduana Stars knew that results in their last game against Ashanti Gold couldn’t ruin their victory party. Aduana Stars eventually lost their final game of the season to Ashanti Gold 4 -2 but they had already achieved their goal before the whistle of this match was blown.
They clinched the title with an impressive 16 wins, nine draws and only five defeats. Aduana Stars was formed in 1985, and gained promotion to the Ghana Premier League in 2009/10 season and made an instant impact, winning the league on their debut. They won the league as the least scoring side, setting a world record for least productive champions with 19 goals in 30 matches. With an average of 0.6333 goals per match, they broke the all-time record set by Trabzonspor. The Turkish Super Lig side became champions in 1979–80 with 25 goals in 30 matches (average of 0.8333).
Since then, Aduana Stars have failed to win the biggest prize in Ghanaian club football. They came very close to winning it last season but missed out to WA All-Stars, who made history by lifting their first ever silverware.
This season, they have shown that there is light at the end of the tunnel by clinching the league with a game to spare. By virtue of winning the league, Aduana will compete in the CAF Champions League. Their last appearance was in 2011, where they suffered a first-round exit.
A seven-year wait is over, and Aduana Stars are finally kings of Ghana once again.
