When you start a new job everything is perfect, your co-workers are perfect, your boss is perfect, and you can’t think of a better place in the whole universe to work. However, things can eventually get a bit rough along the way, and it becomes hard to find the energy to push through your day. The work week can start out great but then start to drag on for what seems like forever. Sometimes you need a little pick-me-up so you can get through the week without feeling like you’re completing the final months of a prison sentence. Here are some tips for staying energized enough to make it to the finish line.
1.Team up with a work buddy
Don’t eat every meal alone, huddled over your keyboard. Invite a work friend out to lunch every now and then. Your social media network shouldn’t be the closest thing to human contact you experience throughout your work day. Spending time with co-workers can help you build important alliances that not only assist you with your career growth but also give you that added boost to get through your work week.
2.Look at pictures
No, we’re not just talking about that dusty family photo on your desk. Although that photo could make you want to finish work on time so you can get home to be with your brood, it may not give you what you need to get through the week. We’re talking about vision boards. Get a bulletin board and post pictures of goals that you have either days, weeks, months, or years from now. When you’re able to visualize where you want to be in the future, you’ll see the work week as the stepping stone that will help you get there. So go get some scissors and a stack of magazines.
3. Join a Career Community
Become part of a local or online career group. Some good places to explore are LinkedIn and Monster’s career advice forum. This will provide you with a place to compare notes, share advice, and just talk shop. Your new contacts may even be able to share how they power through the week.
4. Listen to music
Music is good for the soul. Try playing some upbeat tunes in your office (or on your headphones, if you sit in a cubicle then sit close to others). Provided that you don’t find the music distracting, it may help you focus on your and get projects that await you. You can even try creating a playlist just for your roughest days at the office.
5. Give yourself a pat on the back
You deserve a break. Set up a reward that you can look forward to at the end of the week. It could be going out for drinks with your co-workers or just staying home and ordering pizza with friends. Whenever your day starts to take a downward spiral, just think about the sweet treat you have waiting for you at the end of your hellish week.
