CHALKBOARD Education Wins Seedstars Accra 2016 Start-up Competition

Chalkboard Education, a start-up company that offers e-learning solutions for universities and corporations, emerged winners at this year’s Seedstars Accra Start-up competition, which was held at Impact Hub Accra on Sunday 21st August 2016. This year’s competition was the third edition being held in Ghana under the auspices of Seedstars world.

Seedstars is a global organization based in Switzerland with activities in more than 50 countries around the world. The company’s goal is to unspecifieddevelop and foster start-up ecosystems by connecting, building and investing in driven entrepreneurs. They do this by promoting and investing up to $1.5million in emerging start up markets through its exclusive startup competition that takes place in emerging markets. Their vision is to reduce unemployment in emerging markets through promotion and investment in entrepreneurship.

This year’s competition saw nine startups who are less than 2years old, raised less than USD500, 000 in funding and built a minimum viable product, ideally with existing traction and scalable nature, pitch in front of a 5-panel expert jury.

The five-panel jury consisted of Selam Kebede (Associate for Africa, Seedstars World), Mansa Ayisi-Okyere (Executive Secretary, African Entrepreneurs Hub), Ethel Cofie (Director of EDEL Technology Consulting), Leticia Browne (Investor Relations, Ghana Angel Investors Network) and Ato Ulzen-Appiah (Director, Ghana Think Foundation).

At the end of the pitching session, three startups were able to meet the Seedstars requirement of being smart startups that solve regional issues and develop profitable products for the global market to support regional businesses and growth.

Techaid solutions, the brain behind Asanka, a digital content delivery system that allows users to push content from a web platform onto a user-friendly, low cost and low powered device in an easy to access format emerged 3rd runner-up.

At the end of the day, Chalkboard Education proved to the jury and the audience that they merited the enviable USD 500,000 worth of equity investment.

They will join the global Seedstars family and represent Ghana in the 13532923_1222752604416498_2653807342309068339_nregional and global Seedstars summit which will be held in Switzerland.
